Justin Balog

Justin Balog is a director at Mixed Media Machine. He is also the co-founder of The Photo Frontier, a leading resource in videography and photography education. His focus is narrative filmmaking and visual journalism telling brand stories.  After completing his FTP testing, he was told, "You're not a genetic marvel, but you're pretty F-in' fit." Now, less focused on watts and more focused on capturing the beauty where his bike takes him, Justin will be heading up the film's production and trekking the cameras across Iceland in the bags on his bike.

Remi will be heading up the expedition planning, logistics and storytelling.

Kemst þó hægt fari
— Icelandic Proverb Translation: You will reach your destination even though you travel slowly.

Expedition Iceland is a documentary film about establishing the first Trans-Icelandic route, by bicycle, from the northern most town of Raufarhöfn to Iceland's southern most point, the black sands of Vik.

Along the way, we will do some good...

THE PLAN

The Cause

All Mixed Media Machine projects are designed to give back to both the local communities we visit, and the global community we all share.

GLOBAL IMPACT

World Bicycle Relief mobilizes people through The Power of Bicycles. We are committed to helping people conquer the challenge of distance, achieve independence and thrive.

For many people in rural regions of developing countries, poverty is a daily reality. In areas where walking is the only mode of transport, a Buffalo Bicycle offers the real and immediate benefit of reliable access to essential goods and services. Powered by the remarkable human spirit, bicycles are a catalyst to possibilities.

We're hoping with this project, that we are able to raise money for both of these organizations.

LOCAL IMPACT

Icelandic Rescue is a fully volunteer organization dedicated to saving and protecting the lives of Icelanders and those who visit its shores. The organization itself is supported by donations and the sale of fireworks for the New Year celebration. If you haven't experienced an Iceland's New Year's firework display, you haven't experienced fireworks.  500 million pounds of explosives are detonated every New Year’s Eve. You read that right, 500 million pounds. If you think this display is regulated and coordinated by trained professionals; you're wrong. It's not only the largest fireworks display in the world, it's put on entirely by private citizens.

THE PLAN

This plan is simple, well not really, but the goal is straight forward.  We're going to establish the first north to south Trans-Icelandic bike route, traversing the entirety of Iceland.  Along the way, we're going to interview the people we meet, document the beauty we find and raise money for the Icelandic Rescue and World Bicycle Relief.

THE FILM

An authentic and ground breaking movie making process. Part of establishing a new route is documenting the journey.  Along with our gear, we'll be packing an entire field production kit allowing us to share this journey with others.  Following our successful traverse, we'll be releasing a full featured documentary about the expedition.

THE ROUTE

Yet To Be Discovered

Departing Iceland’s northern most town of Raufarhofn, we plan to traverse the interior highlands via a combination of paved road, gravel road and single track as we make our way to the southern shores of Vik. The proposed route is designed to leverage the existing Icelandic Hut system, and put us in contact with as many Icelanders as possible to exchange ideas and learn about the second greenest country on earth.

Distance: ~300KM
